Three students have been accorded accolades at the just ended Thesis defence held by the Department of Communication Studies at the Amissah Arthur Language Centre at the University of Cape Coast.
Ms Leeza Vivyan Aboagye-Yeboah and Mr. Samuel Nana Effah Obeng, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Communication Studies and Baba Sherifatu, MPhil in Teaching Communicative Skills successfully defended their theses.
The defence showcased a range of studies from various disciplines in communication studies including development communication and media studies and professional communication.
The theses included: the rhetoric of banking in Ghana: A content analysis of communication strategies of loan agreement forms, presented by Leeza Vivyan Aboagye-Yeboah, An exploration of teacher power in the communicative skills class by Baba Sherifatu and radio and the sustainability of artisanal fishing in Elmina, Ghana the study of Benya FM by Samuel Nana Effah Obeng.
The candidates were given opportunities to present their studies to the panel and share some experiences they had during their studies.
The panel chaired by the Head of Department, Prof. Williams K. Gyasi and Prof. Prof. Richard Torgbor Torto critically analysed the theses and made some recommendations for consideration.
The panel members including; the Graduate Programmes and Research Seminar Coordinator, Dr. Daniel Edem Adzovie; the supervisor for Leeza Vivyan Aboagye-Yeboah and Baba Sherifatu, Dr. Wincharles Coker; Internal Assessors, Dr. Rita Twumasi, and Dr. Jacob Nyarko; Mr Theophilus Atram Nartey, Dr. Josephine Brew Daniels and the Cognate, Dr. Isaac N. Mwinlaaru. Also present were postgraduate students as well as family members and friends of the candidates.
The defence is the second in series since the Department rolled out the MPhil programme two years ago. The Department runs two postgraduate research programmes – the Master of Philosophy in Communication Studies and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Teaching Communication Studies.
Interested applicants with a good first degree in any related area can enroll. Also, the Department runs career-oriented programmes – Master of Arts (M.A) in Communication Studies and Master of Arts (M.A.) in Teaching Communicative Skills.
Head of the Department of Communication Studies, UCC and chairman of the defence lauded the candidates for their hard work and urged the other students present to learn from the corrections made by the panel and present their work on time.
